BREAKING NEWS ON THE SOUTH CENTRAL FARM!

On the eve of the groundbreaking for our donated land in Buttonwillow,  and the 4th anniversary of losing our South Central Farm, a for-sale sign has gone up at 4st and Alameda!

The asking price - $16 million. So we are once again forced to raise enormous funds! We remain undaunted. We know we can do it. But only with your help and support...

Help us get this lot, still barren from being bulldozed, and regrow the largest urban farm in the country!

Every donation brings us closer to success!

Two Farms One Mission

The Buttonwillow and South Central Farms are intricately linked in our mission to a more holistic and equitable food system. And,  to creating independent and  autonomous communities through sustainable jobs.

What made the South Central Farm so meaningful was its ability to build community out of diversity.

Now we are expanding that spirit to the Central valley. We hope more areas will join us as we work to benefit the general community, society,  and environment.

The Farm Project

Over the last seven months, through a web of support and an amazing show of generosity, a myriad of local and national businesses have donated materials and labor in excess of $150,000 to rebuild the existing defunct well and make it viable for farming.

The Well Project has made real the South Central Farmers' dream to farm their own land, organically and sustainably, now and for generations of farmers to come.

In a nutshell, in 1992 the Meso-American community in South Central LA was given a rat infested, garbage strewn 14-acre lot by the city of LA. It was an effort to revive the battered community devastated by the riots that year. 350 poverty-level families were given plots to plant as a way to supplement donations from the LA Food Bank with home grown produce. The "South Central Farm" became the largest community garden in the US and was an oasis with more than 150 varieties of fruit trees, vegetables and medicinal herbs. It was a haven for the entire community with music, bar-b-ques, and more, that took place there on hot summer nights. Fourteen years later, in a suspicious deal, a real estate developer acquired the acres from the city and started eviction proceedings against farmers.

SCF Monthly Sweat and Get Beautiful at the Farm
Friday, August 13th

Meet small-scale farmers who are working tirelessly to bring change to our food system.
See the beauty in every drop of sweat that goes into growing healthy food for our community.
Experience generosity of the Mother Earth that provides for us at all times.
Help realize the vision of the South Central Farmers Cooperative by becoming a member.
Let’s take back the farm on 41st and Alameda!

Started the day at sunrise at Centro.

After spending an hour looking for Waldo (or was it Edgar?! ^_^)... Ai, Evelyn and I drove to the farm.   It was a good two hours of non-stop farm talkin’ + relaxing.

Greeted by Connie’s big, loud “welcome to the South Central Farm” we went right into cherry tomato picking with Alberto y Baldo.
