South Central Farmers' Cooperative South Central Farmers' Community Supported Agricultural Program (CSA)
You are invited to participate in South Central Farmers' Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA). This program is based out of South Central, Los Angeles. It is organized and operated by the South Central Farmers' Cooperative, a grassroots economic development of the South Central Farmers' Health and Education Fund 501c(3) organization. This program was designed by those who once grew produce on the 14 acres, known as the South Central Farm, to meet the need to provide fresh, healthy grown produce to its community members.
The South Central Farmers' CSA program has expanded beyond the 14 acre piece of property located at 41st and Alameda by linking locally grown produce to all members of Los Angeles, regardless of race, ethnicity, background, and economic status. This CSA believes that all residents are entitled to fresh, healthy food choices. Its mission to educate, grow and harvest produce, thus improving the current status of food sovereignty within Los Angeles communities, is fostered through the work and positive actions of the CSA program. Additionally, this CSA program provides an avenue for residents, organizations, faith based groups to help fellow community members receive fresh, healthy, locally grown produce, through an option offered by the CSA program, in which one person or a group can purchase one box or multiple boxes of produce to be delivered to those who do not have access or monetary means to purchase fresh, healthy produce. What's Inside a Box??? Each box of produce includes a variety of produce. The variety of produce offered is determined by what is in season and what is ready to eat or "vine-ripened" at the time of harvest.
All produce is grown and harvested on land that is currently leased by the South Central Farmers' Cooperative, located in Bakersfield, California. Community members from Los Angeles, travel to the Bakersfield farm each week to plant, clean, and harvest the produce.
The farm is registered organic and in process of organic certification and the methods of providing nutrients to the plants and controlling pests that cause damage to our crops are done so without the use of chemicals or harmful pesticides, rather integrated pest management practices are used.
